The CDC reports that Developmental disabilities occur among all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups. In the United States, about one in six, or about 17%, of children aged 3 through 17 years have one or more developmental disabilities, such as:
We do a good job of supporting people with developmental disabilities when they are children. But when they get older, many of those support programs go away. Then, they are more at risk. One organization that is working to solve this problem is the Leon Advocacy and Resource Center, and my guest today is the CEO, Phillip Hall. Leon Advocacy Resource Center’s purpose is to end the segregation and devaluing of persons with developmental and other disabilities by promoting supports and services that provide access to all of community life.
